This firesteel is made of misch metal and is a modern version of an ancient way of making fire.
Misch Metal is an alloy of rare earth metals that, when scraped very quickly produces burning fireballs of molten metal which last much longer than regular sparks. They easily ignite well prepared and chosen tender.
These take a bit more technique to use than regular Light My Fire type of Ferro rods. These require a quick, firm scrape with a hacksaw blade, spine of a knife or amost any sharp edge.
