Spyderco strives to lead the knife industry not only with their innovative designs, but also with their use of increasingly advanced materials. They have proudly used high-grade steels from Crucible on many of their models, and now they've gone one step further and developed their own alloy. Crucible's CPM-SPY27 is a particle metallurgy stainless steel with Spyderco's proprietary alloy "recipe". This remarkable composition, enhanced by the amplifying effects of cobalt and the state-of-the-art Crucible Particle Metallurgy process, is produced exclusively for Spyderco and will be featured in select USA-made models. All SPY27 models can be identified by their Cobalt Blue handle color, as is the case with the FRN scales on this Native 5 Lightweight.
The Native 5 is a great platform for this steel, using a solid lockback, slim profile, and textured scales with a forward choil for impressive grip. The whole package weighs just 2.5 ounces.
